if you don’t do what Fear says…you’ll go ahead and speak up, you’ll sign up, you’ll buy, you’ll sell, you’ll jump.
Ah, fear. Some say push through it. Others say confront it. Still others say ignore it.
I really love what Danielle LaPorte has to say about fear in her new book The Fire Starter Sessions (which totally rocks and you should definitely get it). She very simply states that you should not do what fear says.
Listen for fear’s familiar voice, fear’s attempt at advice, and just don’t take it. Simple. Straight forward. Love.
Here are some examples where I’ve taken this approach to fear recently:
- I’m really tired and I don’t think I’ll be able to run today. Fear says don’t run. Instead, I lace up my running shoes and hit the streets. Result = 3 1/2 mile run.
- I want to get rid of some books. Fear is telling me that I will lose a piece of my identity if I give away my books. I do it anyway. Result = I feel free and liberated (and with some cash in my pocket too ).
- There is an inspiring colleague I want to connect with. Fear tells my I shouldn’t bother her, that she’s too busy to help me. I ask anyway. Result = a big Yes!
Listen to your fear. What is fear trying to tell you? Now, just don’t do it.
I’d love to hear how you aren’t taking fear’s advice. Share how you don’t listen to fear in the comments.
